10 Reasons Competency Exams for Seafarers Are More Stressful Than Ever

As the world is progressing, demands for different jobs are also touching the sky. One of such problems is being faced by the candidates who want to join merchant navy courses in India to become seafarers. The competency exam they must have to pass is not easy at all.....

Getting started to earn money is not as easy as some people think, the actual realization comes when he/she has to pass through the tough exams like MMD OR MCA. It is observed that as the world progresses, competitive exams become more difficult. Officer under training is not only supposed to focus only on his exams, he has to take measures on different issues. Here I have few reasons behind this mystery.

New Maritime Laws:
Being a merchant navy is not as simple as we think it would be. Every new officer has to study and remain aware of every new rules and regulation that prompt out. Every new incoming rule adds up in the in the previously existing syllabus and increases the bulk of it, which is a far difficult and competitive task for an officer.

Finding the related stuff:
The competitive exams are not every ones cup of tea, they demand high concentration as well interest. They have to go through bundles of books which could be in the form of hard copy or soft copy. The main problem arises when they cannot access to the required book (because of high rates sometimes). Finding accurate and exact stuff is on its own another hurdle before the exam. In addition to these problems the major problem is finding the up to date books, as we know in this age of educations authors tend to update their book.

Going through the websites of governing bodies:
Only studying for the exam is not everything, they have to go through the official website of the authorities to stay up to date with latest news and articles at the same time. Why is he supposed to visit these sites on a regular basis?

So that he can gather info regarding his datasheet, assignments and examination systems.

Financial Constraints:
As described earlier, this job is not that easy because there are many financial problems which a seafarer bears during his life course. He is paid on the basis of the time spent onboard. Many sick leaves and other such facilities are available but they didn’t cover and hide this problem. This problem is a great stress factor for an officer.

Course selection:
In India, to apply for a COC, one have to complete ROC, GMDSS, STCW courses with good grades and in a less time as he has to go back to the board as soon as possible. This process takes a lot of time and money as there are many other candidates who are also willing to apply as well. So this makes a competitive exam a little bit tough for a seafarer.

Pressure to Go Back Onboard:
One can’t earn money if he spends all the time at home because a seafarer gets money as long as he is onboard. So, this tension of getting back to bore to get money for his own family, has a great impact on seafarer’s personality as well as at his work ability.

Limited time:
The announcement period of the result is too long and a sailor has to wait if he wants to go back onboard and earn some money. Another time taking and breathtaking moment for a sailor is when he suffers through the tension of being mounted back onboard. This waiting period for a sailor is quite difficult for a seafarer.

No extra circulars activities:
There is no room for extra circulars activities while preparing for the exam because of the almost unlimited syllabus. While preparing for the competitive exam it is impossible to spare sometimes for refreshment. He can prepare for the exam with full concentration or can take part in non-educational activities. He cannot carry both study and personal interests parallel.

Documentation and Government Bodies:
Gathering the concerned info like in the form of different documents or photocopies is never an easy task. This is because concerned bodies have made the examination process very irregular and unsmooth. The candidate has to struggle to gather the right info.

Identifying the fake people (Touts):
Sometimes candidates also have to face some selfish and fake people who make them different fake offers to extract their money. They try to trap them by offering irrational offers regarding their exams. Such people can be annoying if not warned strictly or ignored.
